Filing a Hate/Bias Motivated Incident Report and Resources

Acts of hate, intolerance, and discrimination are harmful to the campus community, disruptive to the educational mission of the university, and contrary to the UC Santa Cruz Principles of Community.

You can help promote a safe and tolerant campus climate by reporting hate crimes and bias motivated incidents. Report all suspected hate incidents by utilizing the Hate/Bias Incident Report Form. Hate crimes are reported to the University Police.

What is the difference between a hate crime and a bias incident?

  • Hate crimes are criminal offences committed against persons, property or society that are motivated by bias based on race, religion, ethnic/national origin, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation. Hate crimes are intended to hurt and intimidate individuals, and the purveyors of hate use physical violence, verbal threats or violence, vandalism, and in some cases weapons, explosives, and arson, to instill fear in their victims.
  • Bias incidents are acts of conduct, speech, or expression that are motivated by bias based on race, religion, ethnic/national origin, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation. Hate incidents, while not generally illegal, victimize individuals and entire communities.
